Hardwired vs Battery GPS Tracker
If the asset has dependable vehicle power, hardwire. If it sits unpowered for days, use a self-powered terminal. Most mixed fleets need both.

How mixed fleets get this wrong
Putting battery units on day cabs creates swap busywork. Putting hardwired units on dropped trailers creates silent assets the first time the pigtail is unplugged. Start from the duty cycle: hours per week with power, hours parked, and how fast you need to know about a move.
Ingress ratings (IP69K vs IP68) describe water and dust tests. They do not choose the power architecture for you.

Should I use a battery GPS tracker on a truck?
Usually no, if the truck has a reliable 12/24 V supply. Hardwired terminals avoid battery swaps on powered assets.
Should I hardwire a trailer tracker?
Only if the trailer has a power source you can actually use when dropped. Many dry vans do not, which is why battery trailer gateways exist.
